History of the Nashville Fire Department:
The Nashville Fire Department was established in 1787 and was the first fire department in Nash County, with M.W. Linke serving as the first fire chief.

The fire department was organized on December 12, 1916 and then re-organized under local government on July 1, 1992. We are currently operated by the Town of Nashville and managed by a department head, Tim Pope, who also serves as the Fire Chief.

Fire Protection Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department provides its customers the protection of life and property from fire. The fire department is a true combination fire service organization comprised of a career fire chief, (8) career firefighters, (6) part-time career firefighters, (26) volunteer firefighters and (12) junior firefighters. The fire department apparatus fleet consists of a Command Vehicle, (3) Engines, a Squad, a Tanker, a Brush Unit, a Pickup and a 24-foot Technical Rescue Trailer. The Fire Department serves both the Town of Nashville corporate limits and a rural 5-mile response district under contract with Nash County. Both the Town of Nashville and the N.S. Gulley Fire Insurance District boast a Class 4 Public Protection Classification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance. 30 of the department members are certified firefighters and participate in numerous hours of continuing education throughout the year.

 

Hazardous Materials Response Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department provides hazardous materials response at the Hazmat Operations level. 37 members are certified as NC Hazmat Responders and are trained in hazardous materials containment, monitoring and recognition. Each member participates in a minimum of 3-hours of hazmat refresher training per year.

 

Emergency Medical Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department is certified by the NC Association of Rescue and EMS as a Medical Provider Unit. The department provides the Emergency Medical Technician level of pre-hospital care under the Nash County EMS Model System. Basic life support skills including defibrillation and airway management are provided by (23) certified NC Emergency Medical Technicians. The department is dispatched to medical incidents that are deemed as emergency calls only by Nash County Communications, often arriving and initiating life saving measures several minutes before arrival of Nash County EMS. Members participate in a minimum of 3-hours of monthly medical refresher training and every member of the department is re-certified yearly in CPR.

 

Heavy Rescue Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department is certified by the NC Association of Rescue and EMS as a Heavy Rescue Provider Unit with a full complement of heavy rescue equipment carried on Engine 14, Engine 141 and Squad 14. (22) members are certified as NC Vehicle /Machinery Rescue Technicians. These members participate in a minimum of 3-hours per month of rescue refresher training and have successfully performed several rescues.

 

Confined Space Rescue Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department is trained and equipped to provide confined space rescue for victims that could be caught or trapped in grain bins, silos, manholes, equipment, etc. (29) members are part of the Confined Space Rescue Team and participate in a minimum of 16-hours of yearly refresher training for these types of rescues. Members have performed (1) successful rescue of this type.

Trench Rescue Provider  The Town of Nashville Fire Department is trained and equipped to provide trench collapse rescue for victims that could be caught or trapped in a collapsed excavation or trench. (29) members are part of the Trench Rescue Team and participate in a minimum of 16-hours of yearly refresher training for these types of rescues.

 

Rope Rescue Provider - The Town of Nashville Fire Department is trained and equipped to provide high and low angle rope rescue for victims that could be caught or trapped. (5) members are certified as NC Rope Rescue Technicians and participate in yearly refresher training for these types of rescues.

 

Injury Prevention and Life Safety Education  The Town of Nashville Fire Department in conjunction with funding from the Nashville Fire District Auxiliary, provide several comprehensive injury prevention and life safety education programs throughout the community. Current programs provided include Risk Watch Remembering When and Get Alarmed. The department is recognized by the NC Department of Insurance as a Permanent Child Passenger Safety Seat Checking Station with (5) career staff members certified as National Child Passenger Safety Seat Technicians. The department also hosts birthday parties, present programs in the local school and daycare system, provides fire extinguisher training and participates in numerous special events throughout the year. (4) of the fire department staff members are also certified as NC Fire and Life Safety Educators.

 

Fire Scene Investigation  The Town of Nashville Fire Department is very fortunate to have a NC Certified Fire Investigator on staff. Additional members of the fire department have chemistry backgrounds and work with our CFI to determine the cause and origin of any suspicious fires within the Town of Nashville. Once a fire scene has been processed and is ruled incendiary, the case is turned over to law enforcement.
