Home Safety Tips

*Escape first then call for help
*Develop a home escape plan and practice it frequently
*Designate a meeting place outside of your home
*Make sure everyone knows two ways to escape from every room
*Practice feeling your way out with your eyes closed
*Always crawl low under smoke and try to keep your mouth covered
*Never return to any burning building for any reason;
it may cost you your life

Remember to check the batteries in your smoke detectors every month AND
change your batteries with Daylight Savings Time

* Remember to buckle your seat belts and keep the kids safe by placing them in the proper child safety restraint.  It could save a life in the event of a vehicle accident.  Children should remain rear facing until the age of one and at least twenty pounds. Children may be placed in an approved booster seat at the age of five and a weight of forty pounds.  New state laws require that kids remain in a booster seat until the age of eight or a weight of eighty pounds.  For additional information on child safety seats and their proper placement and weight ranges contact the Nashville Fire Department at (252) 459-3017

We want families to establish a meeting place outside of their home in case of fire and practice their home escape plans regularly. Only you can help us make a difference!
